Essential Oils: the essential low down
Updated: Oct 12, 2018
Essential oils can be a little confusing. What are they? Why should you use them? We’ve put together a quick guide to get your started with essential oils. Once you start using them, you wont go back!
What are essential Oils?
We like to think of essential oils as liquid gold. They are the highly concentrated and very powerful essence of plants. Another words they contain the concentrated goodness of plants. The oils can be found in the dried seeds, peel, resin, leaves, bark or flowers of the plant. There are around 150 essential oils used in aromatherapy today. Each oil has as many as 100 chemical components that make up its unique properties and delicious smell.
Essential oils for wellness. The sciencey bit.
Essential oils can help induce a state of mind. The stresses of modern life can often leave us needing a little help to wind down or to perk up. Our sense of smell is more immediate than our other senses which explains why scents can be so evocative. Stimulating oils like rosemary can help to promote focus and concentration, whilst calming essential oils like lavender can help you drift off to sleep. Essential oils have a profound affect on our nervous system helping to lift mood and enhance wellbeing. When you inhale an essential oil the hypothalamus in your brain produces chemicals and triggers moods. We have designed a range of essential oil blends around common wellness concerns. Lacking energy? Try our energising booster blend. In need of a little balance? Our ylang ylang blend will work a treat!
How to use essential oils
There are lots of ways to use essential oils. We like to use them in 3 ways; on the body, for the mind and in the home.
For use on the body and for massage; essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier or base oil to make them safe for application on the skin. You can use vegetable or nut based oils such as avocado, coconut, almond or jojoba. Our organic almond and jojoba oil leaves skin soft and rejuvenated. General blending guidelines (for a adult with normal skin), recommend using 2-2.5% of essential oils in your dilution. For example to make a 100ml mixture, use 98ml of carrier oil and 2ml of essential oils. Need help diluting your essential oils? Check out our dilution guide here.
For use on the mind, one of the best ways to use essential oils is to inhale them. This can be as simple as putting a few drops on a tissue and breathing deeply. We recommend adding a few drops to your diffuser (try 3-8 depending on your preference). Alternatively, add a few drops to a warm bath and allow yourself to soak for at least 10mins for the aroma to take effect.
There is nothing better than filling your home with beautiful natural fragrances. Unfortunately most plugins and air fresheners contain nasty chemicals and toxins that can be harmful to inhale. Using essential oils to fragrance your home means your house smells incredible, without digesting all the nasty chemicals! And you only need a few drops in a diffuser. Choosing quality essential oils
It’s all about quality when it comes to essential oils. It’s not always easy to know whether or not you are buying a pure, natural, good quality essential oil. Synthetic fragrances, whilst cheaper and may smell good, do not contain any of the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. You will get the most benefit from choosing pure, high quality oil that is sustainably sourced. Try to avoid products that contain added ingredients and bulking agents that reduce the quality of the oil. Bergamot + me essential oils are 100% pure and therapeutic grade, which means you get the maximum benefits from your oil.
